Hormones Are The Problem!

At it’s most basic, losing weight is about burning more calories than you eat.  That seems simple enough, but if it were really that simple, none of us would have a weight problem.  So what is it that makes it so difficult for some people to lose weight, no matter what they do?

    The answer lies in understanding how the body’s systems are regulated, and that’s by way of hormones. There is one specific hormone, leptin, that is responsible for how we eat and store fat.  Hormones such as insulin and leptin play a significant role in how the body metabolizes the food we eat, and whether it is used for energy, for protein synthesis, or for fat storage.

    Leptin was discovered by scientists in 1994, and it is released exclusively by the excess fat cells in the body.  It's job is to signal the hypothalamus in your brain to do two things; to 'tell' you that you're full, and to stop burning sugar and to start burning fat. If your body releases too much leptin, the receptors will eventually burn out and your hypothalamus will no longer 'hear' leptin (leptin resistance).

    So Leptin levels and the ability of the hypothalamus to do its job are key to successful weight loss. Much like insulin resistance leads to diabetes, leptin resistance leads to weight loss resistance.  With weight loss resistance, your body gains weight and then retains it.

This is why some people remain at a healthy weight most of their lives and then suddenly gain weight, and no matter what they eat or how much they exercise, they just can’t lose weight and sometimes continue to gain weight.

    Studies also show that leptin resistance is related to the majority of disorders relating to aging including: heart disease, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, and arthritis.  Being overweight increases your risk of having a heart attack, your chances of developing cancer, and the need for joint replacement surgery due to joint degeneration.

So What Causes Leptin Resistance?

The most common cause of leptin resistance is toxicity.  Toxins attach to fat cells and cause an increased release of leptin to the hypothalamus contributing to leptin resistance. These toxins can also lead to headaches, muscle and joint pain, fatigue, brain fog or lack of concentration, and inability to control body temperature. 

    Toxicity can come from many sources such as exposure to mold in your home, frequent contact with household cleaning chemicals such as laundry and dishwasher detergents, it can even come from the amalgam fillings that you still have in your teeth.  Until the body is detoxified and hormone balance is restored, the vicious cycle of weight loss resistance cannot be broken.
